March 2026

Dear colleague,

If you’re looking for evidence of the range and depth of our projects, and the kind of close collaborations at which we excel, then this month’s newsletter is a good place to start.

We’re very pleased to have played our part in ensuring Martha’s Rule becomes firmly embedded in our system. This is a significant patient safety measure that has very quickly achieved a high profile, and our role has been to support trust teams in sharing their experiences and gain insights into best practice. Feedback from a recent shared learning session suggests that work is progressing very well.

You can also read about our feasibility study into the potential of quantum computing to achieve significant health benefits in our communities. The study underscores the widespread conviction that quantum computing will be crucial in meeting our healthcare challenges, and highlights pleas for our region to host a quantum innovation centre.

Elsewhere, you can read about the progress we’re making in tackling respiratory conditions. We’re particularly pleased about a significant reduction in GP visits associated with our fuel poverty work, which is aimed at people with such conditions. In the same clinical area, Health Innovation North West Coast will also be contributing to an ambitious programme, involving all the health innovation networks, to improve the diagnosis of respiratory diseases and the treatment of patients.

Given that the treatment of COPD and other respiratory conditions is one of our clinical priorities, this feels like genuine progress.

Yours, Phil

Dr Phil Jennings

Chief Executive

Backing for Martha's Rule

Health Innovation North West Coast is proud to have supported trusts in our region to implement Martha’s Rule, a patient safety initiative that ensures the concerns of patients and their families are acted on to help the early detection of deterioration.

We have supported the scheme since its introduction two years ago, and the end of its second phase saw a gathering at Alder Hey Children’s NHS Foundation Trust for trusts to share their learning.

News

Fuel poverty project linked to reduction in GP visits

Health Innovation North West Coast has collaborated on a project to reduce the impact of fuel poverty which has been linked to a 9.8 per cent reduction in GP visits.

The scheme uses a dashboard to identify individuals with respiratory conditions who would most benefit from an intervention. It brings together partners from health and care, local government and the voluntary sector to offer a range of measures to vulnerable individuals.

The findings of an NHS Cheshire and Merseyside report suggest the project is having an impact – and you can read more on our website.

Quantum computing - a feasibility study

Quantum computing has the potential to deliver numerous benefits to health and social care. That’s why Health Innovation North West Coast is proud to have completed a feasibility study that explores the concept of establishing a health and care quantum innovation centre in our region.

You care read more about the work, including both the full study and a summary, on our website.
